A Pause for a Photo

October 24, 2014

This has been a long week. Actually, long doesn’t begin to describe it. It’s more like looooooonnnnngggg. That kind of week. Mix a few sleepless nights with a car in the shop most of the week, sprinkled with being behind at work and a new project that’s eating up a lot of time (but is still under wraps), and you have my week. But! Today is Friday. Time for a deep breath.

Today that came in the form of a field trip. It was a quick one, impulsive. I was on my way to an errand and pulled over on the side of the road to take a photo of a corn field. The sun was low, and this field was gorgeous, and all I had was my phone. But still, I pulled over, jumped out, and snapped a few photos. Then I drove up the road and around the corner to snap a few more. My son was in the back seat and every time I stopped he said, “All done!” But I wasn’t done. A few more snaps, then we were on our way.

Here’s what I’ve learned. When the week has been looooooonnnnngggg and I’m feeling rushed, that is the exact time I should pull over to the side of the road. I need to notice something. I need to stop. I need to see that the world is beautiful and still, even if my world feels frantic and exhausting.

I do this quite a bit, and it’s always impulsive. I can feel it start to happen, and every time I grab my camera and go (even if the only camera I have is my iPhone). A few months ago, it was to a sunflower field at sunrise. A few weeks ago, to a local park to capture the leaves. Today, it was a corn field where I stood in the sun and took a deep breath and knew I was better for it. The photos I took were nothing special, but that’s not the point. It was taking a pause in a hectic week. That made all the difference.
