It is rare for us to have a Saturday together, rarer still for us to have nothing planned. But this Saturday, that’s exactly what we had. A day to do whatever we wanted. I hunger for these kinds of days since most days are full of comings and goings, to-do lists and time frames. As Adam and I discussed how we might spend our day, we laid out all of our options. Should I go to the gym for two hours and do whatever I want? Should we go to the museum? The indoor swimming pool? The park?
I was totally paralyzed. I couldn’t decide. Instead, I burst into tears. Yes, I wanted the time alone and, yes, I wanted to do something fun together. More specifically, I wanted to have an adventure. And that’s exactly what we did. We got bundled up, packed some snacks, and headed about forty-five minutes south to a local nature preserve to go for a hike.
What we didn’t know was that we’d be hiking in the snow! We drove straight through November and into December the further south we went. A light dusting of snow became a few inches, and I felt grateful we were all wearing boots and hats. And it was magical, the way the first snow always is, only this time it was even more so because it was totally unexpected. So, we hiked and I took pictures, and we had our first taste of winter.
But, to be honest, I’m hoping we don’t see snow again for at least another month! I’m not ready for winter yet.
